DEMOREST, Ga.  – The Piedmont College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches inside Cave Arena Saturday losing 3-0 to Berea in both. The first of two was designated as a USA South conference competition with the loss moving the Lady Lions' record to 1-3 in conference play. 

Match 1: Piedmont 0, Berea 3

The Mountaineers of Berea College proved to be too much for the Lady Lions claiming the win in straight sets 25-17, 25-9, 25-20. After a hard fought first set, the Lady Lions struggled in the second before making it a close call in the third. 

It was 14-11 with Berea in front when the Mountaineers took over in the first set to finish off Piedmont. The Mountaineers scored four straight points to start the run and finished the set earning the final three points. In the second set, Piedmont was down 9-5 when Berea took control outscoring Piedmont 15-2 with those two points for Piedmont coming on attack errors for Berea. It was 24-7, but Piedmont managed to add two late points to finish the set 25-9. 

The third set was a much closer affair with Piedmont leading 6-2 early and eventually 18-17 late in the set. Piedmont could not maintain momentum as Berea finished the match with an 8-2 run, again with service errors being the only points for Piedmont. 

Match 2: Piedmont 0, Berea 3

Piedmont kept it close in the first against the Mountaineers in a 25-17 decision, but struggled again in the second losing 25-10. The Lady Lions regained some traction in the third set but ultimately dropped the match with a 25-16 mark in the third set. 

The Lady Lions were in it late in the first set but the Mountaineers closed it out taking the final five points. The set was tied at eight in the second set, but the Mountaineers outscored Piedmont 17-2 to end the set and ended it on a 12-0 run. 

The third set saw Piedmont make some late runs to stay in the contest, but Berea proved to be too much for the Lady Lions. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
--Piedmont tallied just 18 kills in the first match to Berea's 35 while managing 16 kills in the second match to the Mountaineers' 46.
--BRIANNA KING led Piedmont with eight kills in the second match. 

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--Berea's Deanna De La Torre had 15 kills in the second match, one off Piedmont's total for the match. 
--JESSICA BEIL led Piedmont with 16 digs in the second match.
