BREVARD, N.C. - The Piedmont men's tennis team delivered its second consecutive 9-0 shutout win at Brevard on Saturday afternoon, this time in nonconference action.
With a lineup featuring exclusively underclassmen, the Lions were able to win all three doubles lines before taking each of the six singles matches in straight sets for the shutout.
The freshman duo of
LAKEN FERRELL and
KODY DILLS began the festivities by cruising to an 8-0 victory at No. 3 doubles for their first career collegiate win. Then, after
MIKE PORCELLI and
KYLE GRAVES took their No. 2 doubles match at 8-4, freshmen
JACKSON TRAYLOR and
CONNOR BOWLES were able to grind out a hard-fought win at No. 1 singles in a lengthy 14-12 tiebreaker to give Piedmont the doubles sweep and a 3-0 lead.
Singles play brought more success for the Piedmont underclassmen as it took two matches without dropping a game (Porcelli and Bowles). Traylor fought to win 7-5 in the first set at No. 1 and closed out the 9-0 sweep with a 6-2 win in his second set.
Graves (6-0, 6-1), Ferrell (6-1, 6-0)Â and Dills (6-3, 6-2) each prevailed with dominant wins at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles.
Up next, the Lions will remain on the road, battling Pfeiffer in a nonconference match tomorrow at 1 p.m.
