DEMOREST, Ga. - In its long-awaited USA South opener, the Piedmont men's tennis team picked up its first win of 2021, dominating Maryville for a 9-0 Saturday home victory.
The Lions did not drop a game at No. 1 doubles, No. 2 doubles, No. 3 singles or No. 4 singles on their way to the shutout.
With the Scots only having four available players, Piedmont was able to take No. 3 doubles by default before its No. 2 doubles team of
ROMAN WEBB and
SILAS SANDLES blanked their opponent for an 8-0 win. The Lions then completed the sweep as
HOUSTON MEDLOCK and
CHASE MORRIS did the same at No. 1.
Courtesy of a pair of default wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, the Lions clinched the match before one singles point was played. However, that did not stop them from dominating across the board. Freshmen
MIKE PORCELLI and
JACKSON TRAYLORÂ picked up their first collegiate singles wins in dominant fashion, as each won 6-0. 6-0 to keep the shutout rolling.
That left two matches on the court and Medlock and Sandles took care of business at No. 1 and No. 2, with each rolling to a straight set win. The win marked the first of Medlock's career at No. 1 singles and the first of Sandles' career at No. 2 singles.
Up next, the Lions will take to the road and continue USA South play, traveling to take on Brevard next Friday, March 19 at 2 p.m.
