DEMOREST, Ga. - Strikeouts were aplenty Monday evening at Loudermilk Field, but a record night by the Piedmont pitching staff was not enough to pull off an extra-inning win as the Lions lost 4-3 to Adrian in 14 innings.
The Lions' pitching was stellar Monday as the pitching staff combined for 25 strikeouts.
SAM CARPENTER left with no decision as the game was tied at two but he also tied his career high with 13 strikeouts in the contest.
CARTER BALLSTADT added seven strikeouts,
JUSTIN MANUS tacked on three and
NATHAN BOYCE added two.
Piedmont led 2-0 in the third inning when
JAMES WHITMER singled to drive in
KYLE DEJESUS and
ZACH SWINDELL. The Bulldogs were able to tie the game in the fifth inning after an error.
Adrian was up against a two out situation but an error allowed one on and the Bulldogs managed a double and a single to drive in the tying runs unearned.
It would take extras to decide and Adrian scored in the 11th to put the Lions on notice.
CARTER BALLSTADT was working on the mound but was moved back to centerfield mid-inning after a single to take the lead and a double.
JUSTIN MANUS entered and got a pair of strikeouts then a ground out to end the inning and give Piedmont the opportunity to fight back. That's exactly what they did as it was similar with two outs,
JACK BARTLEWSKI was walked, Whitmer struck out but reached on a wild pitch and
CARTER BALLSTADT singled to drive in the tying run.
Ballstadt's play was close at first, but then an error by the catcher on the throw home allowed pinch runner
HEATH WALDROP to score and tie the game.
The two would go back and forth another few innings but in the 14th, a solo home run proved to be the difference as it was
NATHAN BOYCE who took the loss on the hill.
The Lions stranded 19 batters and were issued 10 walks.
Up next, game two of the Adrian series is scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday at Loudermilk.
