DEMOREST, Ga. – Piedmont College's baseball team woke the bats up in game two of its series with No. 22 Adrian as the Lions exploded for double digit runs in a 10-5 win over the Bulldogs.
The Lions (5-3 overall) tallied 12 hits and used an aggressive baserunning approach to jump out to an 8-0 lead by the sixth inning. Each of Piedmont's first two runs came on separate double steal attempts in the second and third innings.
First, it was
CARTER BALLSTADT who stole third and scored on a throwing error in the second before
ZACH SWINDELL did the same in the third inning.
Piedmont got another run in the third on a
JACK BARTLEWSKI sac fly and another in the fourth when
KYLE DEJESUS was hit by a pitch in a bases loaded situation, making it 4-0 nothing Piedmont.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Piedmont offense really opened the floodgates when five hits plated four runs and opened the score up to an 8-0 advantage.
While the bats were building the lead, starting pitcher
PEYTON IRVIN was building himself a quality start as he held the Bulldogs scoreless into the seventh. The sophomore ran out of steam and was pulled after allowing three hits to start the seventh, but he did more than enough to earn his second win of the season.
Adrian mounted a comeback attempt with three runs in the seventh and another in the eighth, but a two-RBI single from
CONNER JELLEY in the Piedmont half of the eighth increased the margin to 10-4, which was enough insurance despite another run in the ninth for the Bulldogs.
TURNING POINT:
--Piedmont's four-run sixth inning gave the team some breathing room and opened up an eight-run lead.
