DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Piedmont University men's basketball team battled in a 66-55 loss against SUNY Brockport on Tuesday in Florida. The Lions rallied in the second half but came up short, moving their record to 5-5.
JUSTIN QUICK and
JORDAN FOOTE led the way with eight points each in the contest and accounted for the first 10 on the board for the Lions.
WILL RICHTER added a 3-pointer with 11:01 to play in the first to break the Quick and Foote scoring stretch.
The Golden Eagles took a 10 point lead 23-13 but the Lions clawed back, continuing to fight. The SUNY Brockport defense kept the Lions at bay holding Piedmont scoreless for nearly five minutes down the stretch in the first half.
SUNY Brockport led 35-23 at the break but
AARON PALMER broke the scoreless streak to start the second half with a 3-pointer. The Golden Eagles built a 14 point lead but Piedmont fought back to trail 52-46 with just over four minutes remaining.
The Lions fought down the stretch with
NOAH REARDON and
JOE HELENBROOK making key baskets in the waning minutes.
TURNING POINT:
--Piedmont battled back after trailing by 12 at the break to cut it to six with four minutes to play, but the lead was too much to overcome.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--Mekhi Beckett led all scorers with 24 points in the contest and three of the Golden Eagles 3-pointers.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
--The Golden Eagles led from start to finish in the game.
UP NEXT:
--The Lions have an exhibition contest against Stetson scheduled for Wednesday in Deland, Florida before a break for Christmas.
