Volleyball Drops Pair of Matches at Maryville in USA South Play

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Piedmont volleyball team was on the road Saturday facing Huntingdon and Maryville but was unable to secure a set win in a pair of 3-0 losses. Against Huntingdon, the Hawks claimed the win 25-13, 25-16, 25-12 while Maryville took the win 25-15, 25-21, 25-16. 

Match 1: Huntingdon 3, Piedmont 0

In its opening match of the day, the Lady Lions were able to keep pace early in the first set before seeing the Hawks pull away. Piedmont totaled 19 kills with a pair of Lady Lions earning four kills each in HANNAH KATE CHADWELL and JACLYN SAMPSON

JIA WEATHERSBY made her Piedmont debut with action in both matches of the day with one kill and a pair of blocks against the Hawks. BROOKLYN GUNN led the way with 10 of Piedmont's 19 assists. 

Match 2: Maryville 3, Piedmont 0 

The Scots accounted for the first five points of the opening set and were able to set the tone early. Piedmont fought back to just a 12-9 deficit before the Scots were able to surge ahead to an 18-10 lead. 

Piedmont would continue to fight, but in the second set, it was more of the same as the Scots took a 7-1 lead forcing an early Piedmont timeout. The Lady Lions were able to keep it close at times and made their best effort in the second set, but fell 25-21. 

The two teams made the same number of attack errors (21), but the Scots were able to amass 43 kills to Piedmont's 21. Two Scots' earned double-digit kills in the match while Chadwell and JESSICA SCONYERS led Piedmont with four each. 

TAYLOR BROWN led Piedmont with 10 assists while JENNIFER HERRERA added five. 

Up next, the Lady Lions will take on Brevard Tuesday on the road at 6:00 p.m.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
-- Piedmont had five blocks against Huntingdon with both HANNAH KATE CHADWELL and JACLYN SAMPSON adding three. 
-- JESSICA BEIL tallied 26 digs against Maryville to lead Piedmont. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
-- Piedmont was even on the day with 40 kills and 40 errors with a .000 attack percentage.
