DEMOREST, Ga. – A three-game winning streak for Piedmont University's men's soccer team was halted on Saturday afternoon as the Lions fell 2-1 to conference foe Huntingdon late in the first overtime period.
Kelan LeBlanc's strike with less than a minute left on the clock in the first overtime period broke the long-standing deadlock and sent Huntingdon off with an impressive road victory. That win moves the Panthers to 2-0-1 in USA South play, keeping them very much in contention for the west division regular season title.
Huntingdon bookended the scoring on Saturday as the Hawks got on the board in the 10
th minute of the game when Cristo Rocha scored after a saved shot from Liam Kearns gave him a good look in front of the net.
Piedmont equalized late in the period as senior
LULE TEKILEMARIAM found the net in the 41
st minute after a long throw in from sophomore
JUSTIN DEAS bounced around in front of the net.
Freshman
JASON AUSSIN was the last to touch it as he headed the ball backwards toward left post to set up Tekilemariam's first goal of the season.
Back-and-forth play dominated much of the second half as both teams took turns getting long run outs and creating scoring chances, but neither group could find the net, setting up LeBlanc's overtime winner.
Piedmont's loss drops the Lions to 1-2 in conference play with three more contests left to play in the regular season, which leaves them plenty of time to get a couple of much-needed wins to get back in the postseason hunt.
Inside the Box Score:
- Both sides created a plethora of scoring chances for themselves as the game saw 38 total shots and 12 total corner kick opportunities.
- Neither team shied away from contact as each team was whistled for 14 fouls. Despite that, only Piedmont's
JUSTIN DEAS was handed a yellow card.
Up Next:
- The Lions end a three-game homestand and hit the road this coming week as they travel to LaGrange to face off with the Panthers at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 13.
