NEED TO KNOW:
Score: LaGrange 2, Piedmont 1
Records: LaGrange, 5-4 (2-2 USAS); Piedmont, 5-8 (1-3 USAS)

LAGRANGE, Ga. – Piedmont University's men's soccer team dropped its second game on a row by just one score on Wednesday night as the LaGrange Panthers completed a season sweep of the Lions with a 2-1 win.

The two teams met earlier this season in Demorest in a non-conference match, with LaGrange coming out on top 3-1. The Panthers have won each of the last four meeting between the two sides.

The Lions have been scoring early and scoring often recently, and that trend continued in this one as sophomore OWEN GATES gave Piedmont a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest.

Gates headed in his first goal of the season off a pass from sophomore MATTHEW FRANKLIN, making Gates the fifth different Lion to find the back of the net in 2021.

LaGrange would even up the score in the 22nd minute on a line drive strike from Blake Webb, who also scored in the season's first meeting. That score would hold until the end of a relatively clean first half that saw just five combined fouls.

Just as Piedmont did in the first half, LaGrange wasted no time in notching what would be the game-winner as Enrique Hernandez scored in the 50th minute to go up 2-1, making it his second game-winning goal against Piedmont this season.

Both sides earned good looks at the net during the second half, including three promising chances for LaGrange that were all turned away by Piedmont keeper CJ WYBORN.

Wyborn, the two-time defending USA South Rookie of the Week, finished the game with a career-high 11 saves.

At the other end, Piedmont looked to have a chance at an equalizer in the 67th minute when senior CAMERON EARLS was taken down just outside the top of the box. The ensuing shot from sophomore MATTHEW LOFTIN sailed just high as Piedmont was turned away empty-handed.

The Lions had one more solid chance in the 87th minute as a contested shot from Earls missed high and to the right, allowing the Panthers to hold on for their first win since September 25.

Piedmont drops to just 1-3 in conference play with the loss, which leaves the Lions with ground to make up if they want to make another appearance in the USA South postseason tournament.

Inside the Box Score:
- Piedmont's defense deployed a solid "bend but don't break" strategy, but couldn't get the offense going as the Lions were outshot 26-16 and put just four shots on goal.
- After a clean first half, things got a little chippier in the final quarter of the game as 19 fouls and four yellow cards were handed out in the second half.

Up Next:
- In need of a conference victory, the Lions return home for senior day on Saturday, October 16, to play a Berea team that is still looking for its first conference win of 2021. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 p.m. in Demorest.
