Volleyball Splits Conference Action Earning Win Over Wesleyan

BEREA, Ky. - The Piedmont volleyball team split conference action on the road Saturday with a win over Wesleyan 3-0 and a loss to Berea 3-1 in Kentucky. 

Match 1: Piedmont 3, Wesleyan 0

The Lady Lions swept the Wolves after being in a tough five-set battle at Wesleyan earlier in the season. Piedmont claimed the win 25-13, 26-24, and 25-18. 

The first set was all Piedmont from the start as the Lady Lions went on an 8-0 run to lead 16-3. The Wolves were able to battle back, but Piedmont closed it out with no concern. 

The second set saw Piedmont take a large lead 17-10, but the Wolves were not intimidated and fought back to force extra points. Piedmont led 24-20 with set point, but the Wolves managed three kills and an ace to tie it up. Piedmont won the final two points off a kill by JENNA ASH and an attack error by the Wolves. 

Piedmont was ready to close out the win in the third set building a 23-15 lead, finishing the job to seal the sweep. The Lions had 32 total kills led by Ash who totaled nine in the contest. BROOKLYN GUNN led Piedmont with 15 assists while HANNAH KATE CHADWELL had an impressive five service aces. 

Match 2: Berea 3, Piedmont 1

The Mountaineers swept Piedmont earlier in the season, but Piedmont was able to rally and steal a set on Berea's home court in a 3-1 loss. Berea claimed the first two sets 25-20 and 25-10 before Piedmont rallied for a 25-21 win in the third. The Mountaineers closed out the win with a 25-19 victory. 

Piedmont kept pace in the first set losing by five before the Mountaineers controlled the second set to take a 2-0 advantage. 

The third set saw Piedmont take control early with an 8-4 advantage. Berea kept it close, but a 7-0 run gave Piedmont an 18-11 lead and momentum. Berea continued to chip away and eventually evened the set at 20-all, but Piedmont took five of the final six points for the set win. 

Berea was fired up in the fourth set taking a 9-0 lead out of the gate and putting away the victory. 

BRI KING led Piedmont with 10 kills while Ash added eight. Beil had 32 digs while TAYLOR HERRMANN contributed 15. 

Up next, Piedmont hosts Bob Jones on Tuesday evening inside Cave Arena at 7 p.m.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
-- JESSICA BEIL led the team in digs in both contests with 22 against Wesleyan and 32 against Berea. 
-- BRI KING had the only double digit kill performance with 10 against Berea in the second match of the day. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
-- Piedmont won against Wesleyan in each of the two matches the teams played this season, sweeping them this time after a 3-2 win earlier in the season.
