DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont volleyball team picked up a pair of victories Wednesday inside Cave Arena taking wins over Toccoa Falls and Agnes Scott. The Lady Lions surrendered just one set all evening winning 3-1 over the Screaming Eagles and 3-0 over the Scotties.
Match 1: Piedmont 3, Toccoa Falls 1
The Lady Lions got off to a hot start against Toccoa Falls taking the first two sets 25-19 and 25-20, but the Screaming Eagles were able to take advantage of some errors in the third set and steal one 25-17. Piedmont left no doubt in the fourth set taking it 25-13 in dominant fashion.
Piedmont jumped out to an early 13-5 lead forcing a Toccoa Falls timeout in the first set, but the scoring continued as Piedmont led 20-12. TFC made a late run to challenge, but Piedmont put it away on a kill by
JESSICA SCONYERS.
The second set saw the Screaming Eagles race ahead to a 9-5 lead, but Piedmont battled back to tie the set at 15 and used a 5-0 run to force a Toccoa timeout as Piedmont led 19-15. It was a back-and-forth battle down the stretch but the Lady Lions' lead proved to be enough.
The Screaming Eagles took charge in the third set to steal one away, taking the Lady Lions by surprise, but Piedmont used momentum in the fourth to leave no question, dominating their opponent to win by 12.
It was a balanced attack for Piedmont as seven Lady Lions recorded kills led by
JACLYN SAMPSON with 10 and
CIERA PHELPS with nine.
JESSICA BEIL added 24 digs while
JENNA ASH contributed 14.
Match 2: Piedmont 3, Agnes Scott 0
The Scotties tried to keep pace with Piedmont but the Lady Lions were able to claim a 3-0 win 25-16, 25-18, 25-18. Piedmont led 23-13 in the first set before the Scotties tacked on a few late with Piedmont scoring the final two points of the set.
Piedmont dominated in the second set to lead 7-0 early and by as many as 11-1. The Scotties began to chip away but Piedmont worked it back to a 10 point lead 20-10 late. Agnes Scott was able to rally and stay in the set outscoring Piedmont 6-1 late, but the Lady Lions closed it out on a service error.
In the third set, Piedmont saw several new faces inside Cave Arena with a total of 18 players seeing action against the Scotties. It was a closer set as ASC led 13-12 but the Lady Lions took control down the stretch to close out the 25-18 win for the sweep.
HANNAH KATE CHADWELL and
BRI KING both added six kills while
JENNA ASH,
CIERA PHELPS and
REAGAN MERCADO added four kills each.
Up next, Piedmont hits the road for the final road weekend of competition this season taking on Wesleyan and Berea in Kentucky Saturday.
