RALEIGH, N.C. – The Piedmont College baseball team dropped a heartbreaking 6-5 decision at William Peace Saturday. A walk-off walk after a pair of strikeouts to start the bottom of the ninth downed the Lions.

It was the Pacers on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first after three straight singles off JAKOB VALLEROY to begin the inning. The Lions went three-up, three-down in the first three innings then evened the score in the fourth.

WES SNYDER singled to begin the inning followed by TYLER SHELEY adding a hit as well to put runners on the corners with one out. JONATHEN BURKETT ground out to short for the second out of the inning but Burkett drove in Snyder to tie the contest at 1-1.

Valleroy worked a clean bottom of the fourth with a 1-2-3 inning of his own and gave up only a walk in the fifth. Valleroy's day was done after the fifth as RYAN COX entered for the sixth.

CARTER BALLSTADT tripled to lead off the fifth inning and was driven in by CONNOR JELLEY in the next at bat making it 2-1. It was 3-1 by the time Cox entered the game as Piedmont added another run in the sixth off two hits as freshman JAMES WHITMER drove in TYLER SHELEY

Both teams scored in the sixth and seventh innings as William Peace scored off a hit by pitch to begin the inning coupled with a steal, advancing on a throw and a groundout. With the score still in the Lions' favor 3-2, Piedmont added two runs on three hits in the seventh to take a 5-2 lead, but the Pacers were able to tack on two in the frame as well.

WILL JANOFSKY entered in relief of Cox in the seventh, then gave way to Ballstadt after a leadoff single in the eighth. Ballstadt got a pair of strikeouts to start the ninth inning then surrendered a single and three walks including the game-winner.

Up next, Piedmont concludes the conference series with William Peace on Sunday at 2 p.m.
