DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont College men's lacrosse team opened its 2020 USA South Athletic Conference season with a convincing 17-10 win over Huntingdon College on a chilly Thursday night at the Walker Athletic Complex.
AVERY JENKS finished the game with three goals and seven assists, giving him the single-game school record for assists in a game. The sophomore broke Spencer Ortis' record of six, set in 2013 against Beloit.
Piedmont (3-2, 1-0 USA South) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the opening 2:03 of the first quarter as
CHASE GOFF, A. Jenks and
BRADY JENKS all scored. Both Goff's and B. Jenks' goals were assisted by A. Jenks.
The Hawks (4-5, 0-1 USA South) scored their first goal at 7:55, but the Lions answered with a 9-0 run spanning the first and second quarters. Piedmont received goals from A. Jenks (2),
WILLIAM FRENCH (2), Goff (1),
JEREMY KOHN (1),
MICHAEL ANDERSON (1),
DYLAN HAMPEL (1) and
JOSH FRALEY (1) during the run.
The Hawks stopped the bleeding with 4:34 remaining in the half with a pair of goals, but Piedmont led 12-3 at the break.
Huntingdon scored 58 seconds into the third quarter before B. Jenks answered just over a minute later. The Hawks answered with just over two minutes left to cut the deficit to 13-5.
Defenseman
DEZMOND STOLLINGS scored off the opening faceoff of the fourth quarter to extend the lead to nine before both teams traded goals to close the game.
ZACH CZULADA played the entire first half in goal and made seven saves with three goals allowed.
RYAN MORGAN closed the game in cage and had 10 saves.
CHRIS PANNENBACKER dominated at the faceoff dot, going 20-for-25 with seven ground balls. Anderson had five ground balls while
JARED BROCK and
JASON GREXA added four apeice.
