DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont College baseball team dropped its season opener Friday to the #4 ranked Birmingham-Southern Panthers 6-5. The Lions trailed early but fought back to tie the game at 4-4 but were unable to ultimately keep pace with the Panthers.
The Lions were quickly down 3-0 after the top of the first after a pair of errors despite
SAM CARPENTER allowing just one hit. Piedmont went three-up, three-down in the first, but settled in defensively in the second.
JONATHEN BURKETT recorded the first hit for the Lions with a leadoff single in the bottom of the second but was stranded.
HARRISON TRAWICK got the Lions on the board with a bomb to centerfield as he tripled scoring
KYLE DEJESUS cutting the lead to 3-1.
DeJesus was the next one to do damage offensively with an RBI single in the fourth scoring Burkett making it 3-2. The Panthers extended the lead to 4-2, but after the seventh inning stretch, the Lions came alive.
Piedmont tied the game at four all after Swindell scored on a passed ball and Burkett singled to send around Trawick. Once again though, the Panthers answered back with a run in the eighth and the ninth to stretch the lead just past the Lions' reach.
Piedmont loaded the bases in the eighth and ninth innings but was unable to capitalize.
The Lions' pitching staff never allowed more than one hit in any frame as the Lions outhit the Panthers 12-6.
SAM CARPENTER picked up where he left off last season giving up just three hits and no earned runs over five innings pitched. The senior stud struck out eight batters along the way.
Up next, the Lions return to action Saturday at 5 p.m. hosting Virginia Wesleyan.
