NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A six-run sixth inning proved to be the turning point in a 9-4 loss for the Piedmont College baseball team at Christopher Newport Friday. Piedmont tied the contest at one in the top of the sixth, but the momentum was short-lived as the Captains took control of the contest in the bottom of the frame.
CNU took the lead in the first with timely hitting as a pair of singles ended up driving in a run. It was quiet over the middle innings as Piedmont allowed just three hits while recording seven hits through the sixth inning.
Piedmont tied the game in the sixth inning with two hits including a
JAMES WHITMER double to advance
CARTER BALLSTADT to third. Ballstadt was then driven in on a sac fly by
DUKE WODETZKI making it 1-1.
In the bottom of the frame, a leadoff walk then put runners at first and second after a fielding error allowed the second batter to reach. The inning proved to be the difference in the game as the Captains scored six runs on five hits.
Piedmont added a run in the seventh and two more in the ninth, but it was not enough to keep pace with the Captains who claimed the win 9-4.
SAM CARPENTER took the loss going 5.2 innings allowing seven hits and seven runs with just one earned. Carpenter also struck out eight batters.
Up next, the Lions have a pair of contests on the slate Saturday against Roanoke College and Virginia Wesleyan.
