NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A pair of runs book-ending Saturday's game at Virginia Wesleyan helped the Lions to a 4-3 win to split Saturday's contests on the road. The Lions opened the day with a 14-2 loss to Roanoke before bouncing back with a 4-3 win over the Marlins.

Against Roanoke, the Lions saw several new faces on the mound with JAKOB VALLEROY earning the start. Valleroy took the loss pitching 2.2 innings allowing five runs off seven hits while striking out three. The Maroons took a 5-0 lead after three innings, but Piedmont managed to tack one on the board with a HARRISON TRAWICK single to send home CAMERON JACKSON

Momentum was short-lived as the Maroons added another three runs in the bottom of the fifth to lead 8-1. Piedmont again rallied to score in the seventh inning, but Roanoke left no doubt in the eighth adding six runs.

Hours later at Virginia Wesleyan, Piedmont found early momentum with a pair of runs in the first inning. Trawick doubled to start the game then was driven in on a JONATHEN BURKETT single. KYLE DEJESUS drove in TYLER SHELEY as Piedmont scored two runs on four hits out of the gate.

PEYTON IRVIN earned the start for the Lions pitching five innings allowing just one run on four hits and striking out eight. RYAN COX earned the win pitching a solid three innings allowing just one hit, two runs but none earned and struck out five. CARTER BALLSTADT picked up his first save of the season tossing the ninth inning.

It was quiet through the middle portion of the game until the Marlins scored two in the eighth inning to take the lead 3-2 with one hit and two errors in the frame. Piedmont came up to bat needing one to tie and DeJesus delivered sending home ETHAN DARROW to tie the game. DeJesus was thrown out at home for the second out of the inning leaving the Lions down to the final out.

With ZACH SWINDELL up to bat, he reached on an error allowing DUKE WODETZKI to score giving Piedmont the 4-3 edge.

Up next, the Lions face Roanoke Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
