HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. – The Piedmont women's lacrosse team opened its 2020 conference schedule with a 19-13 USA South Athletic Conference win at William Peace University on Saturday afternoon.
Tied 12-12 mid-way through the second half, Piedmont (2-2, 1-0) outscored the Pacers 7-1 in the final 14:19 to take the win.
EMMA FRANSEN and
MACEY HIGGINS each scored two goals during the stretch as
DOMONIQUE STEELE,
AISLYNN KIMBRO and
CASSIDY HEFLIN added goals.
Steele led the Lions with six points off four goals and two assists and also had three ground balls and three draw controls.
Kimbro (3,2) added five points while Higgins (4,1), Heflin (3,1) and
ROWAN BUMPASS (3,1) had four points. Fransen scored three goals.
Heflin also added seven ground balls, 10 draw controls and three caused turnovers.
LINDLEY WARD picked up five ground balls and had five caused turnovers
Both teams battled in the first half as the score was tied 10-10 after the first 30 minutes.
Peace (1-2, 0-1) jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead with a Bumpass goal sandwiched between a pair of two-goal scores. Bumpass then scored her second goal before Heflin cut the deficit to one.
Both teams traded a pair of goals as Steele and Fransen each scored. PC then used a three-goal run to take its first lead of the game with 8:34 remaining in the opening half.
HUNTER PARRETT had 13 saves and seven ground balls in the win.
Turning Point
-- Tied 12-12 at the 16:02 mark in the second half, Piedmont used a 7-1 run to win the game.
Inside the Box Score
-- Eight of Piedmont's goals were assisted.
-- The Lady Lions had three more ground balls (30-27), two more draw controls (18-16) and had an exceptional day clearing the ball (28-for-32).

-- The Lady Lions return to action on Saturday, March 7th, at Meredith College for a 3:00 p.m. start.
-- Piedmont will be back in Demorest on March 21 for a conference matchup against Mathodist.
