BROOKHAVEN, Ga. – The Piedmont women's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the 2020 season after a close, 12-11, win at Oglethorpe on a misty Wednesday night.

The win also gave head coach Kirsten Smith her first win as leader of the Lady Lions' lacrosse program.

Piedmont (1-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead just under six minutes into the contest after senior DOMONIQUE STEELE scored the game's opening goal off a free position shot.

Oglethorpe (1-2) answered and went on a 5-1 run to pull ahead 6-2 with 12:03 left in the first half. Steele added her second goal after a 3-0 run by the Stormy Petrels.

Both teams traded goals as ROWAN BUMPASS and EMMA FRANSEN scored, making it a 7-4 game.

Piedmont then used a 3-0 run with goals from Steele, Bumpass and Fransen to tie the game 7-7 at halftime.

The Lady Lions opened the second half with a pair of goals from Bumpass and MACEY HIGGINS to take its final lead of the game.

Leading 10-9, CASSIDY HEFLIN scored back-to-back goals to extend the Lady Lions' lead.

Oglethorpe would answer, but could only pull within one score.

A Piedmont penalty at 2:39 gave Oglethorpe a great opportunity to tie the game 12-12, but the Lady Lions held strong and ran out the clock to capture their first win of the young season.

Bumpass, Steele and Fransen ended with three goals apiece while Steele (two) and Fransen (one) added assists. Heflin added one assist and had six draw controls and three ground balls.

AISLYNN KIMBRO had one assist and three caused turnovers.

HUNTER PARRETT made eight saves in the win.
