The 2019 Piedmont volleyball season began Friday with a split highlighted by a 3-1 win over Belhaven. The Lady Lions lost in straight sets 3-0 to Oglethorpe to begin the season with both contests taking place at Emory University in tournament action.

Piedmont trailed early in the opener vs. Oglethorpe but managed to cut into a 17-5 deficit to come back and challenge the Stormy Petrels in a 25-20 loss in the opening set. The early struggles continued, but so did the rallies as Piedmont trailed 11-4 in the second set but battled back to another 25-20 margin.

In the third set, the Lady Lions kept it closer early but could not keep pace with the Stormy Petrels who won 25-19. ERICA BALKCUM led Piedmont with six kills, but that was just the warm-up for her breakout against Belhaven.

Against the Blazers, Balkcum led Piedmont with 18 kills as three Lady Lions were in double figures. Along with Balkcum, MADISON SHUSTER and HANNAH KATE CHADWELL had 10 and 11 kills, respectively.

Piedmont dropped the first set to Belhaven 25-23 after again trailing early and having to use a late rally to keep it close. In the second set, the Lady Lions took charge jumping out to an 18-9 lead before closing out a 25-14 win.

The third set would take extra points but Piedmont pulled it out with a 26-24 win and claimed the match for their first win in 2019 with a 25-20 win in the fourth.

Balkcum not only led the Lady Lions with 18 kills but also added 22 digs which was second-most on the team. LAINEY CHOINIERE led that statline with 29 digs as Piedmont evenly distributed the duty with three players tallying 13 or more digs.

Turning Point
--It was a close contest against Oglethorpe but the Lions could not close the gap dropping the sets by no more than six points.
--The Lady Lions dropped the opening set to Belhaven, but bounced back to sweep the next three including edging out the Blazers 26-24 in the third set.

Standout Performances
--LAINEY CHOINIERE accounted for 20 digs against the Stormy Petrels and another 29 against Belhaven.
--ERICA BALKCUM had 18 kills against the Blazers, just one off her season-high in 2018.

News & Notes
--JENNA WENDEL had 39 assists against Belhaven accounting for all but seven of Piedmont's assists.

Up Next

--The Lady Lions remain in tournament action in Atlanta with a pair of matches Saturday against Sewanee and Emory & Henry.
