DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont women's lacrosse team had a chance with two seconds left in regulation but fell 13-12 to USA South Athletic Conference opponent Averett University on Saturday afternoon.

An Averett yellow card with two seconds left to play set Piedmont (6-6, 5-2) sophomore EMMA FRANSEN up for a free position shot, but the Cougar's goalie made the save to close out the game.

Fransen scored a team-high six goals and added one assist while Averett's Elizabeth Peasley produced the same stat line. The two combined for the final seven goals of the game with neither scoring in succession.

Junior CASSIDY HEFLIN dished out five assists while scoring two goals. She also added eight draw controls.

Heflin would go on to score in the opening minute to give Piedmont a 1-0 lead before Averett tied the game at the 16:11 mark.

Fransen and Heflin would add goals to pull ahead 3-1, but the Cougars scored three-straight to take a one-goal lead.

ROWAN BUMPASS and DOMONIQUE STEELE would join the scoring to give Piedmont the lead once again, but Averett scored with 53 seconds left in the first half to send the game into halftime tied 5-5.

The Cougars opened the second half with three unanswered goals to lead 8-5. Averett would hold the lead for the remainder of the game.

Bumpass and Peasley would trade goals while MACEY HIGGINS and Fransen scored to bring the score within one.
