Men’s Tennis Clinches Regular Season Title with 5-4 Win at Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. – The Piedmont College men's tennis team remained unbeaten in the USA South with a 5-4 victory at Brevard on Tuesday afternoon.
 
The win gives the Lions (14-5, 11-0 USA South) the USA South West Division Regular Season Championship and clinches them the No. 1 seed for the USA South Tournament.
 
After Piedmont took advantage of a win by default at No. 3 doubles, the Tornados (6-12, 4-8 USA South) answered back immediately with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles to even the score. 
 
However, PC fought back to take No.2 doubles behind a solid effort from seniors ANDREW CHITTY and HARRISON LABOLLITA.
 
Leading 2-1 heading into singles, the Lions immediately extended their lead to 3-1 on Chitty's win by default at No. 6.
 
Brevard cut its deficit to 3-2 after a 6-1, 6-1 win from Tom Mittring at No. 1, but the Lions responded with a 6-0, 6-0 win from CHASE MORRIS at No. 5 to put PC within a point of clinching the win.
 
While the Tornados put their third point on the board with a two-set winner at No. 2, Piedmont freshman HOUSTON MEDLOCK came through in the clutch, delivering the clinching 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 to give the Lions the regular season title.
 
With the match already decided, Brevard took a third-set match tiebreaker to win at No. 3 singles.
 
Up next, the Lions are scheduled to close out conference play by hosting LaGrange this Friday, April 19 at 2 p.m.
 
TURNING POINT:
- With the score tied at 1-1 in doubles, HARRISON LABOLLITA and ANDREW CHITTY prevailed, 8-5, at No. 2 to give the Lions a much-needed edge heading to singles.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Leading just 4-3 late in singles action, HOUSTON MEDLOCK delivered the clinching winner, a dominating 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles.
