ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Piedmont College baseball team won in come-from-behind fashion over North Carolina Wesleyan College Sunday 9-7. The Lions trailed 6-1 early in the contest but pulled ahead and held on for the victory.
Relief pitching was key in the victory as
DAVID CRAFT earned the win pitching 4.2 innings of work allowing just one run and four hits. Craft's win moved his record to 5-1 this season while
MATT VONDERSCHMIDT closed out the contest over the final two innings allowing two hits and striking out two for his ninth save of the season.
Piedmont led after the top of the second when
ANDREW BURDEN scored on a
JONATHEN BURKETT sac fly. Burden led off the inning with a double, one of three hits for him in the contest.
The lead was short-lived as the Battling Bishops did most of their damage in the third inning with six runs on five hits and one error giving them a 6-1 advantage.
The Lions chipped away at the lead with runs in the next three innings scoring two in the fourth, three in the fifth, and taking the lead in the sixth. Piedmont added another pair of runs in the eighth inning for good measure.
