Women’s Lacrosse Rolls Salem to Open USA South Play

DEMOREST, Ga. –  The Piedmont College women's lacrosse team opened its USA South Athletic Conference schedule with a 16-3 win over Salem College on a cold and misty Saturday evening.
 
Junior ROWAN BUMPASS scored the game's first goal just 35 seconds into play off a free position shot to give Piedmont an early 1-0 lead.
 
Classmate DOMONIQUE STEELE would add to the lead with a pair of goals before ERIN AYLWARD added her first goal of the season at the 24:56 mark.
 
After a span of 10 scoreless minutes, Bumpass and Steele added three goals to put the Lady Lions ahead 7-0 with 9:53 left in the first half.
 
Piedmont would score two more goals in a 23 second span with goals from MACEY HIGGINS and Steele before EMMA FRANSEN gave Piedmont a 10-0 lead with 1:24 remaining.
 
Salem would win the ensuing draw control and snuck a goal in with five seconds left in the half.
 
At the half, Piedmont led in shots (34-2) and ground balls (22-10).
 
SAMANTHA ISHEE opened the second half with her first career goal to bring the goal differential back to 10, but Salem answered back just over three minutes later to keep the score at 11-2.
 
Piedmont would pull away with a three-goal run in less than three minutes with tallies from Steele, AISLYNN KIMBRO and Fransen.
 
Fransen scored Piedmont's final two goals before Salem scored the game's final goal with 29 seconds left.
 
Senior MATTIE KEATON made one save in goal in the first half while freshman HUNTER PARRETT had four stops.

Aylward had game highs in ground balls (8), caused turnovers (5) and draw controls (4).  

 
Standout Performers
-- Steele had a game-high seven points off five goals and two assists.
-- Fransen added six points with four goals and two assists.
 
Turning Point
-- The Lady Lions ran away with the game after Bumpass scored the opening goal of the game in the first 35 seconds.

-- The Lady Lions host Pfeiffer College on Sunday for a 3 p.m. matchup.
