ORLANDO, Fla. – The Piedmont College men's tennis team split a pair of matches on its opening day of competition in the SpringBreakSports.com Tournament in Orlando.
 
The Lions (5-1) dropped its first match of the day, 7-2, to Carthage (10-2) before rebounding with an 8-1 win in the nightcap over Regis (6-5).
 
Match 1: Carthage 7, Piedmont 2
 
Carthage jumped out to a quick advantage by taking the doubles matches at No. 1 and No. 2 before Piedmont fought back, with HOUSTON MEDLOCK and CHASE MORRIS taking an 8-6 win at No. 3 to put PC on the board.
 
However, Carthage responded by posting a quick two-set victory at No, 4 singles to jump out to a 3-1 lead. The Lions answered back immediately on a two-set win of their own as CHASE MORRIS won, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5.
 
From there, Carthage picked up three straight two-set victories to clinch the match. Freshman JARRETT GRAY battled to win a first-set tiebreaker at No. 3 singles but dropped the second set and the third-set breaker to give Carthage the final point of the match.
 
Match 2: Piedmont 8, Regis 1
 
Piedmont responded in its second match of the day, jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead by sweeping doubles competition.
 
All three teams of Lions won, 8-4, before PC kept the momentum going into singles with ANDREW CHITTY's 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6.
 
After the Pride answered back by taking the match at No. 3, PC earned the clincher in the next match to finish, as KANLER CUMBASS closed out a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1 to ensure the Lions a split in their first day of competition in Orlando.
 
Morris continued his strong play, putting Piedmont up, 6-1, in the match with his 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5. 
 
Finally, HARRISON LABOLLITA and HOUSTON MEDLOCK closed out the evening by taking a pair of tough matches at No. 2 and No. 5. Medlock finished the match with a 10-5 win in the third-set breaker over Cam Charbonneau.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- CHASE MORRIS was the only Lion to win four matches on the day, banking a pair of wins at No. 3 doubles with HOUSTON MEDLOCK while also winning both of his matches at No. 5 singles in straight sets.
