DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont College men's tennis team took down Covenant, 8-1, on Tuesday afternoon at the Burgen Tennis Courts.
The Lions (10-3, 7-0 USA South) jumped out to an early lead with an outstanding performance in doubles action.
JARRETT GRAY and
KANLER CUMBASS prevailed, 8-4, at No. 1 to quickly give PC a 1-0 edge. Then, in quick succession, the Lions'
ANDREW CHITTY and
HARRISON LABOLLITA closed out their 8-4 win at No. 2 before
CHASE MORRIS and
HOUSTON MEDLOCK also won, 8-4, at No. 3 to give Piedmont a 3-0 lead and momentum going into singles.
With rain halting play shortly after the beginning of singles action, Piedmont was forced to battle back early, as No.1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles all went to a third set.
KANLER CUMBASS put the Lions within a point of clinching the match with his 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 triumph at No. 1.
Then, after dropping the first set, Gray rallied back to win the second and third each at 6-2 to clinch PC's seventh straight win to begin conference play.
While the Scots (5-6, 5-2 USA South) were able to add a point with a win at No. 2, Piedmont continued its dominant play at No. 4 through No. 6 singles, as Medlock, Morris and Chitty all prevailed in straight sets to close out the 8-1 win for the Lions.
The win gives Piedmont a season-high six match win streak.
Up next, the Lions will step out of conference and travel to take on Berry this Thursday, March 28 at 4 p.m.
TURNING POINT:
- As
KANLER CUMBASS,
HARRISON LABOLLITA and
JARRETT GRAY were all forced to a third set at No. 1 through No. 3 singles, the Lions were in danger of losing control of the match. However, Cumbass and Gray responded with dominant third-set performances to give Piedmont the clinch at 5-0.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Senior
ANDREW CHITTY continued his strong work at the bottom of PC's singles lineup, improving his record to 11-1 on the season with Tuesday's two-set win.

- Both of Covenant's USA South losses this season have been at the hands of the Lions.
