Second-Half Surge Propels BSC Over Piedmont

DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont College women's lacrosse team opened its season with a 16-9 loss to Birmingham-Southern on Friday night at the Walker Athletic Complex.  
 
Trailing 8-7 with 11:59 remaining on the clock in the second half, Birmingham-Southern rattled off eight unanswered goals to take a 15-8 lead with 4:08 left in the game. The Panthers added one late with 11 seconds to play.
 
After a slow start by both teams to start the game, junior ROWAN BUMPASS scored her first of four goals to give the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead with 16:38 left in the first half.
 
After a Panther's goal less than four minutes later, Bumpass gave Piedmont a 2-1 lead before BSC scored twice to lead 3-2. Freshman MADISON VOSHALL would score for the Lady Lions but BSC answered back just over a minute later.
 
Sophomore EMMA FRANSEN tied the game 4-4, but Birmingham-Southern's Jade Cox scored one of her six goals to give the Panthers a 5-4 lead going into halftime.
 
Voshall wasted no time in the second half and scored 51 seconds into the period. Both teams would trade goals before junior CASSIDY HEFLIN gave Piedmont its final lead of the game with 11:59 left to play.
 
Fransen scored the Lady Lion's last goal with 3:31 left to play.
 
MATTIE KEATON tied a career-high with 21 saves in the loss. The Senior also collected a team-high seven ground balls.
 
Bumpass led the team with four goals and added one assist. Fransen and Voshall each scored twice.
 
CASSIDY HEFLIN scored once and had one assist while adding six draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

-- Jade Cox led all scorers with six goals and had four draw controls and four caused turnovers.
 
Turning Point
-- Trailing 8-7, BSC scored eight unanswered goals to run away with the win.

News & Notes
-- Piedmont now falls to 2-3 against the Panthers.

Up Next
-- Piedmont will host Oglethorpe on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Game was originally scheduled to be played on Feb. 19.
