MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Piedmont College men's soccer team suffered a 4-3 overtime loss in a back-and-forth battle at Maryville on Wednesday evening in Tennessee.
Despite leading on three occasions, the Lions (4-5-1, 3-4-1 USA South) allowed the Scots (9-4, 7-1 USA South) to equalize each time before surrendering the game-winner early in the first overtime period.
Piedmont jumped out to a strong start behind another
CAMERON EARLS goal off an assist from
JOSE LINARES in just the 10th minute. However, the Scots' Trevor McDonald scored the first of three goals just under three minutes later to tie the game up at 1-1.
Both teams were kept off the board until late in the first half, when PC's
TYLER GOINS took advantage of a failed punchout by the Maryville goalkeeper and put the shot away to score his first goal as a Lion.
Once again, the Scots immediately had an answer, this time 30 seconds later on Davis Clothier's first of the season.
Coming out of the halftime break with the score knotted at two apiece, sophomore
JARED WILLIAMS also netted his first collegiate goal, causing a Maryville turnover and rifling a shot to the top-center of the net from 25 yards out.
The Lions held a 3-2 lead into the final 10 minutes, when McDonald headed home a long cross to send the game into overtime.
Playing in its third overtime game of the season, Piedmont surrendered McDonald's third of the game in the fifth minute of overtime to give Maryville the victory.
Up next, the Lions remain on the road as they battle William Peace this Saturday, Oct. 12 at 2 p.m.
