Earls’ Hat Trick Not Enough as Lions Fall Late to William Peace 4-3

NEED TO KNOW:

Records: William Peace, 7-3-2 (5-2-1 USA South); Piedmont, 4-6-1 (3-5-1 USA South)

CARY, N.C. – In an evenly matched back-and-forth battle, the Piedmont College men's soccer team fell, 4-3, at William Peace on Saturday afternoon in Cary, North Carolina.

Piedmont's CAMERON EARLS delivered his first hat trick of the season and the third of his career, but William Peace's Ivan Ponce scored three goals himself including the game-winner, to give the Pacers (7-3-2, 5-2-1 USA South) the late victory.

After holding William Peace without a shot for the first 11 minutes, the Lions (4-6-1, 3-5-1 USA South) surrendered a goal on the Pacers' first shot, as a cross from Ponce found Peter Darden, who scored in the top corner to put PC down early.

The Lions threatened throughout the middle of the first half and finally broke through as COLIN OWEN's cross was headed home by Earls for his seventh goal of the season.

William Peace answered right back in the beginning of the second half, as Ponce fired one from just outside the box to give the Pacers a 2-1 advantage. However, under a minute later, Earls' second of the day knotted the score at two apiece.

The score remained tied at 2-2 until the 67thminute, when Earls struck once more for his first hat trick of the season, giving PC a 3-2 lead.

Unfortunately, PC was unable to hold its lead for long, as Ponce scored his second and third goals of the game within a seven-minute span to turn William Peace's one-goal deficit into a one-goal advantage with under 15 minutes remaining.

Up next, the Lions will be right back in action tomorrow at 1 p.m. with a road contest against Greensboro.
