BREVARD, N.C. – The Piedmont College volleyball team dropped a pair of neutral site conference matches Saturday at Brevard. The Lady Lions dropped a 3-1 decision to LaGrange before being swept by Huntingdon 3-0.
Match 1: LaGrange 3, Piedmont 1
The Lady Lions (8-17, 4-7 USA South) dropped the opening set to the Panthers (8-16, 5-4 USA South) 25-22 after a late run by LaGrange distanced them in the opener. LaGrange called a timeout with the score 22-21 in favor of the Panthers, but Piedmont tied the set out of the break.
LaGrange scored the final three points of the set to claim the first, but the Lady Lions evened the score in the second winning the set 25-17. Piedmont built an 18-6 lead and let the Panthers back in the contest with a 7-0 run, but the Lady Lions closed out the set to even the match 1-1.
The third set required extra points with LaGrange edging Piedmont 27-25. Piedmont trailed 24-23 and scored two points off a kill from ALYSSA HALL and ALI WILKINS to lead 25-24. Once again, the Panthers scored three straight to end the set and carried that momentum into the fourth set with a 25-11 win to seal the match victory.
ERICA BALKCUM recorded 13 kills to lead Piedmont with ALINA ROBERTS and Hall adding eight kills each. ALI WILKINS had 31 of Piedmont's 39 assists and JESSICA BEIL led the Lady Lions with 22 digs.
Match 2: Huntingdon 3, Piedmont 0
Piedmont fell behind early against the Hawks (19-13, 8-3 USA South) 18-11 in the opening set forcing a Piedmont timeout. Out of the timeout, Piedmont cut the lead to 19-15 but could not keep pace as Huntingdon took the first set 25-17.
The second set would be decided by the same score with Huntingdon leading 2-0. Piedmont opened to an early lead in the third set, but the Hawks stormed back to lead 11-9 and sealed the win with a 25-16 decision in the third set.
The Hawks had 42 kills to Piedmont's 20 in the match as the Hawks had two players in double figures for kills. BRIANNA KING led Piedmont with seven kills.
TURNING POINT:
--The Panthers were too much for the Lady Lions edging Piedmont in the third set 27-25 and outlasting the Lady Lions' efforts to take control of the match.
--Against the Hawks, Piedmont was outmatched recording 17 points in the first two sets and 16 in the third.

JENNIFER HERRERA was one off a season-high in assists as she tallied 18 assists against Huntingdon.
