MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Piedmont College volleyball team split a pair of conference contests on the road Saturday with a loss to Maryville and a win over Berea. The win over Berea gave the Lady Lions a split during the regular season with the Mountaineers.
Match 1: Maryville 3, Piedmont 0
The Lady Lions (8-14, 4-5 USA South) were unable to keep pace with the Scots (17-6, 8-0 USA South) as Piedmont never scored more than 16 in a set. Piedmont tied the first set at 9-9 before Maryville used a set of runs to build a 21-13 lead.
After a 25-15 win in the first set, the Scots would take the second by the same score. Piedmont trailed 10-8 in the early going but again, Maryville rolled late to take the set decisively.
In the third, Piedmont led early 9-6, but the Scots maintained momentum to roll to a 25-16 win to claim the match.
ALINA ROBERTS led Piedmont with eight kills against Maryville while ERICA BALKCUM, LAINEY CHOINIERE and BRIANNA KING each accounted for six digs.
Match 2: Piedmont 3, Berea 0
Piedmont lost to Berea 3-0 earlier in the season but rallied to earn a season split against the Mountaineers with a 3-0 win. The Lady Lions jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the opening set forcing a Berea timeout.
The Mountaineers steadied and tied the contest at 10 and until Piedmont took a 20-19 lead, no team scored more than two consecutive points. The Lady Lions took the first set 25-23 and claimed the second 25-22.
The Lady Lions used momentum from the first set to open the second 7-1. Piedmont led by as much as 21-11 before the Mountaineers stormed back. Berea trailed 23-13 and used a 9-1 run to keep the set going but the Lady Lions finally closed it out 25-22.
In the third, Berea jumped out to a 7-3 lead and Piedmont called an early timeout. It was a tight battle throughout with the two tied at 23. Berea took a 24-23 lead with set point, but the Lady Lions reeled off three straight including two service aces from SARA DICARLO to seal the win.
TURNING POINT:
--The Scots were able to use late surges in each set to seal the 3-0 win for Maryville.
--It was an emphatic ending for Piedmont against Berea with a 26-24 win in the third set as Piedmont claimed three straight points to win the set.

ALI WILKINS had 29 assists, eight digs and two aces against Berea.
