SALEM, Va. - The Piedmont College volleyball team dropped a pair of close calls Friday taking on Bridgewater and Randolph. Bridgewater took the tournament opener 3-1 followed by Randolph claiming a 3-2 win over Piedmont.
The Lady Lions took the opening set against Bridgewater, but the Eagles won the final three though Piedmont was in it throughout the match. JENNA WENDEL posted 34 assists in the match with just nine coming from other players.
A pair of Lady Lions were in double figures for kills as ALINA ROBERTS led Piedmont once again with 13 kills while TATIANA PAULA added 11. LAINEY CHOINIERE had 26 digs while Wendel posted 16.
Against Randolph, three sets were decided by three or fewer points with Piedmont taking the opening set 25-23. Randolph took a 2-1 lead in the match with 25-17, 25-23 wins before Piedmont evened the score with a 25-15 win in the fourth set.
The deciding set went in favor of Randolph 15-12 after the Wildcats posted a five point run midway through the set. CECE COGLIANO led Piedmont with 11 kills while Paula and Roberts also were in double figures with 10 each.
Turning Point
--The Eagles stormed back after dropping the opening set to take the next three in the 3-1 win.
--It came down to the final set and the Wildcats reeled off five straight points to take the lead and win the fifth set 15-12.
Standout Performances
--Wendel posted 34 and 36 assists on the day while Choiniere had 26 and 24 digs.
News & Notes
--Piedmont now moves to 2-3 on the season.
Up Next
--The Lady Lions will be in action Saturday with a pair of contests against Hollins and host Roanoke.
