Lions Seal Sweep of Lynchburg with 3-2 Win Sunday

DEMOREST, Ga. - The 2018 home schedule for the Piedmont College baseball team ended with a 3-2 win over Lynchburg to seal the series sweep over the Hornets. Piedmont was held to just two hits outside of the sixth inning, but a three run frame gave the Lions the lead. 

RYAN COX earned the start on the mound for the Lions giving up two runs on four hits but took a no decision as Piedmont was able to regain the lead. ALEX ANDREW earned the win for Piedmont moving to 2-1 as he was in the game on the hill when the Lions took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. 

The Lions struggled offensively with just two hits through the first five innings of play, but in the sixth inning, the offense ignited with three runs on four hits. Back-to-back singles by seniors CALEB NORTON and JABIN SMITH started the inning with Norton driven in on a sac fly by JUSTIN GROOVER

With a one-run deficit, ANDREW BURDEN singled and MICHAEL HENDERSON was walked to load the bases. TYLER BURDETTE had the game-winning hit with a 2-RBI single to drive in Smith and Burden to give the Lions the lead.

CALEB NORTON was the only Lion to record more than one hit going 2-for-3 in the game. BUDDY GREEN entered to pitch the ninth inning earning his 10th save of the season as he had a pair of strikeouts. 

Turning Point
--TYLER BURDETTE hit a 2-RBI single in the sixth inning to drive in the go-ahead run to seal the 3-2 decision. 

Standout Performances
--The Piedmont bullpen of ALEX ANDREW, MATT VONDERSCHMIDT, and BUDDY GREEN combined to throw the final four innings giving up just two hits and one walk. 

Inside the Box Score
--Both teams totaled six hits, but Piedmont was able to string together four in the sixth inning to take the lead. 

News & Notes
--This marked the home finale for Piedmont finishing the year 16-4 at Loudermilk Field. 

Up Next
--The Lions head to Birmingham-Southern Tuesday to take on the Panthers at 6:00 p.m.
