Piedmont Takes USA South Tournament Opener 8-6 in Comeback Fashion Over Maryville

LAGRANGE, Ga.  - The Piedmont College baseball team is moving on in the winner's bracket after claiming a come-from-behind 8-6 win over Maryville College Wednesday. The Lions trailed by two twice in the game but continued to grind and clawed their way back into the contest and claimed the win. 

The Scots took an early lead with two runs scored in the first inning off starter SAM CARPENTER, but the sophomore settled in to allow just two hits over the next three innings. Piedmont tied the game in the second inning after ANDREW BURDEN hit a leadoff single followed by a JONATHEN BURKETT RBI-double to score Burden. Burkett was driven in by a NOAH HEATHERLY sac-fly knotting the game at two.

The score would remain tied at two until the sixth inning when Carpenter allowed a pair of hits to the first two batters of the frame and ALEX ANDREW took over. The two runs would score, but Piedmont would take the lead once again in the bottom of the frame answering back with three runs on three hits and two errors to lead 5-4. 

Andrew was in line for the win after pitching just one inning allowing two hits to the five batters faced and would move to 1-0 on the season for his first collegiate win. Piedmont added on three runs in the seventh inning which helped preserve the lead as the Scots continued to fight and tacked on two in the eighth making it 8-6. 

BUDDY GREEN earned his eighth save of the season and fourth straight with four over the Scots in the last four games. 

Turning Point
--Three runs scored on one hit and an error in the seventh inning built an 8-4 lead for Piedmont and was enough for the Lions to hold on for the win. 

Standout Performances
--JONATHEN BURKETT was 2-for-2 as the designated hitter with two RBI and a run scored as well as a walk. 

Inside the Box Score
--The Scots' outhit Piedmont 16-8 but Maryville had four errors as well. 

News & Notes
--This marks the fourth straight win for Piedmont over Maryville after sweeping the Scots over the weekend. 

Up Next
--Piedmont takes on #6 seed LaGrange Thursday at Cleaveland Field at LaGrange College at 1:30 p.m.
