LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - On a chilly, windy afternoon on the mountain, the Piedmont College baseball team used power slugging for five home runs in a 13-2 victory over Covenant College Thursday. The five home runs tie the most in a single contest for PC in the NCAA Era as
TYLER BURDETTE tied the record for most in a single game by an individual with a pair himself.
It was the Killer B's (Burdette,
BRADY BALLSTADT, and
ANDREW BURDEN) and
JABIN SMITH who homered for the Lions with Burdette striking first in the top of the second inning with a two-run home run to score
NOAH HEATHERLY. Ballstadt would follow suit with a solo shot in the third to make it 3-0 Lions.
The offensive attack continued with Piedmont adding runs in each inning from the 2nd-7th and again in the 9th. Burden's home run came in the fifth inning while Burdette's second of the game came in the sixth inning.
JABIN SMITH would add his for good measure in the ninth inning with a 2-run bomb.
SAM CARPENTER handled business on the mound pitching seven innings giving up six hits and two runs scored while striking out six. Carpenter earned the win to move to 4-1 while
BRYAN WHITACRE pitched the final two innings allowing just two hits.
Turning Point
--The game-winning run came in the third inning on the second home run of the day as
BRADY BALLSTADT went yard to put PC ahead 3-0.
Standout Performances
--
TYLER BURDETTE hit a pair of home runs for his two hits in the contest accounting for four RBI and three runs scored.
Inside the Box Score
--Five home runs were hit by Piedmont as that ties the program record for home runs in a game as Piedmont had five against Oglethorpe in April 2010.
News & Notes
--The two runs scored by Covenant are the fewest runs they have scored in over a month.
Up Next
--These two will square off twice on Friday with a doubleheader beginning at noon due to the inclement weather in the forecast for Saturday.
