Baseball Earns Game One Victory Over Brevard 5-4

BREVARD, N.C.  - In a game that came down to the wire, the Piedmont College baseball team held on for a 5-4 win over Brevard College Friday. Both teams scored two runs in the ninth inning as the tying run for the Tornados was stranded at third by BUDDY GREEN. 

Piedmont scored as quickly as possible with JABIN SMITH hitting a leadoff home run followed by JUSTIN GROOVER doubling down the left field line and advancing to third on a throwing error. Groover would come around to score on a wild pitch during the next at bat as Piedmont's first two batters scored before the third at bat was completed. 

The Tornados answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth as SAM CARPENTER held Brevard to three hits coming into the frame. With the game tied at two, BRADY BALLSTADT singled to start the sixth inning and was driven in by NOAH HEATHERLY to reclaim the lead. 

MATT VONDERSCHMIDT came in to close out the eighth inning leaving the bases loaded. The final scoring came in the ninth inning for both teams as Piedmont scored two runs on three hits, all coming with two outs. Brevard scored their two in the final half inning on three hits, leaving two on base. 

JABIN SMITH had three stolen bases in the contest as Piedmont tallied seven SB's in the game. 

SAM CARPENTER earned the win to move to 5-1 on the season as he pitched 7.2 innings giving up two runs on seven hits and striking out seven. 

Turning Point
--The Lions put two runs across in the ninth inning to seal the win as both teams scored two runs in the final frame. 

Standout Performances
--JABIN SMITH hit a home run in the first at bat of the game to set the tone for the contest as he was 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot for the Lions. 

Inside the Box Score
--Brevard left two on base in the ninth inning with the tying run at third as BUDDY GREEN earned the save for his second of the season. 

News & Notes
--The Tornados are a conference opponent but do not count toward the league standings as they are in re-classification from Division II and are not full fledged DIII members this season.

--Piedmont and Brevard will face off for game two on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
