DEMOREST, Ga. - Despite a late inning comeback, the Piedmont College baseball team dropped an 8-6 game to Huntingdon in the series finale Sunday. The Hawks claimed the series finale but Piedmont took the series with wins in the first two contests.
Piedmont took the lead early off a solo shot by
ANDREW BURDEN in right field, but Huntingdon answered with one run on two hits in the second inning to tie the game. The Lions reclaimed the lead in the second as
WES SNYDER singled to drive in
TYLER BURDETTE but
COLLIN GRANT was caught at the plate for the final out.
Huntingdon did not let the Lions' lead live long scoring two runs in the third and another three in the fourth inning with a 6-2 lead after four complete. The Hawks would add two more before the seventh inning stretch which is when the Lions began to come back.
Piedmont scored one in the seventh inning but added three in the eighth inning including a two-RBI double by
JUSTIN GROOVER to score
CAMERON JOHNSON and
CALEB NORTON making it 8-6. The Lions were unable to string anything together in the ninth though.
RYAN STEWART took the loss as the starter for Piedmont with both starters earning the decision.
Turning Point
--Seven unanswered runs scored by the Hawks built an 8-2 lead which was enough to preserve the win despite the Lions' comeback efforts.
Standout Performances
--
ANDREW BURDEN was 2-for-3 with two walks as he had a solo home run in the first inning scoring one run and accounting for two RBI.
Inside the Box Score
--Piedmont scored four straight to end the game in the final three innings, but it was not enough to bridge the gap.
News & Notes
--The Lions are now 10-2 in conference play posting the second best record to Methodist (9-0).
