Bumpass’ Overtime Goal Lifts Lady Lions To 14-13 Win Over Averett

DANVILLE, Va. – The Piedmont women's lacrosse team survived a late comeback attempt by Averett University and won 14-13 in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the win, Piedmont now sits in second place in the USA South standings alongside Methodist. Defending conference champions Meredith holds on to the top sport with a 3-0 conference record.
 
Tied 13-13 with 2:12 left in overtime, sophomore ROWAN BUMPASS scored off a free position shot to give Piedmont the 14-13 win.
 
The Lady Lions jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 11:46 to play in the game. Averett would answer back, but Piedmont would score a pair of goals and take a 6-2 lead into halftime.
 
The Lady Lions opened the second half with a 6-2 run to pull ahead 12-4, but the Cougars would start their comeback and exploded for six straight goals to cut the lead 12-10.
 
DOMONIQUE STEELE would score for Piedmont to extend the lead to 13-10 but Averett would score three straight to tie the game 13-13 with 1:55 to play.
 
CASSIDY HEFLIN led all players with six points (4g, 2a). MATTIE KEATON recorded 13 saves and three ground balls.
 
CAITLIN O'BRIEN scored three goals, recorded one assist and had four draw controls. Bumpass and Steele each finished with two goals and one assist.
