DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont College baseball team claimed a pair of victories to seal the first USA South series of the year over Berea College. The Lions took game one 11-0 and won game two 14-2 in seven innings.
Game one was a dominant win thanks to an explosive offense and
SAM CARPENTER's masterful work on the mound. Carpenter pitched eight innings giving up just three hits and striking out 12 of the 26 batters he faced. Carpenter moved to 2-1 on the season with the win.
BRADY BALLSTADT was 4-for-5 at the plate in game one including going yard with a 2-RBI homer in the fifth inning. Five batters recorded multi-hit games with
ANDREW BURDEN and
WES SNYDER each getting three hits.
Game two was a slower developing game as the offense warmed up, but the two teams were tied at two after the top of the fifth inning. Despite having no hits at that point, the Mountaineers managed a pair of unearned runs after errors in both the third and fifth innings by the Lions.
Piedmont jumped back on top in the bottom of the fifth as Berea allowed six runs on two hits with two errors and three walks. The offense continued to heat up in the sixth inning with back-to-back home runs by
ANDREW BURDEN and
FOWLER BROOKS as Piedmont would go on to win a run-rule victory in the seventh inning.
Turning Point
--The Lions took control in game one early, but a
BRADY BALLSTADT home run in the fifth inning made it 4-0 Piedmont and sealed the Mountaineers' fate.
--In game two, it was again in the fifth inning where Piedmont did its damage with six runs on two hits, two errors and three walks.
Standout Performances
--
SAM CARPENTER picked up the win in game one with a career-high 12 strikeouts in the contest pitching eight innings and giving up just three hits.
--
BRADY BALLSTADT was a combined 6-for-8 at the plate Friday with five RBI.
Inside the Box Score
--The Lions' pitching staff allowed just five hits on the day to the Mountaineers.
--Piedmont had three home runs over the two games.
