JACKSON, Ms. - It came down to the final play Monday as Millsaps won a walk-off to claim a 5-4 win over Piedmont baseball. The Lions led by as many as three runs in the contest but a late rally in the final three innings led the Majors to victory.
Piedmont's offense got going early with a pair of runs in the third inning to lead 2-0.
CALEB NORTON singled to start the inning and would later score on a fielder's choice that allowed
BRADY BALLSTADT to reach first. Ballstadt then stole second and was driven in by an
ANDREW BURDEN single.
The Majors answered with a run in the fourth inning off starter
DAVID CRAFT who tossed six innings giving up three runs on four hits and striking out seven. The Lions added another run in the top of the fifth after Ballstadt doubled and scored on an error that allowed Burden to reach.
Leading 3-1 heading into the seventh, Piedmont tacked on another as
TYLER BURDETTE hit a sac fly to score Norton making it 4-1. At that point, Millsaps began their comeback with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on two hits.
ALEX ANDREW and
MATT VONDERSCHMIDT got three outs each in the seventh and eighth, respectively, but in the ninth,
BUDDY GREEN walked three batters and an error on the final play allowed two runs to score.
Turning Point
--An error on the final play of the game gave Millsaps a 5-4 walk-off win.
Standout Performances
--
ANDREW BURDEN was once again the only Lion with a multi-hit game as he was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base.
Inside the Box Score
--Piedmont out-hit Millsaps 6-5 in the game marking the first time in 2018 for that feat.
News & Notes
--The Lions led 4-1 entering the seventh inning stretch.
