FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Piedmont men's soccer team survived a late scare and emerged with a 2-2 tie against Methodist on Friday afternoon at the Monarch Soccerplex in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
After the Lions (7-1-2, 5-0-2 USA South) took the lead midway through the second half on
GARRETT MOORE's first goal of the season, the Monarchs (5-3-1, 2-1-1 USA South) answered back within a minute to tie the score at 2-all and send the game to overtime, where
BLAYTON DUNCAN's outstanding diving save on a Methodist penalty kick helped PC remain unbeaten in conference play.
The Monarchs broke through first, as Oxie Itoua slipped behind the Piedmont defense and found the back of the net off an on-target cross from Nick Bryant.
Minutes later, Methodist was on the verge of extending its lead to 2-0, but Lions goalkeeper Duncan came up with his first of two penalty kick saves to keep the deficit at one goal. Then, in the 33rd minute,
CAMERON EARLS scored for the eight-straight game and the 14th time this season to tie the score at 1-1.
After both defenses tightened up for most of the second half, PC struck when junior
GARRETT MOORE found the back of the net off a corner kick from
JOSE LINARES. However, the Monarchs responded with an equalizer under a minute later, which forced the game into overtime.
Just over five minutes into the first overtime period, Methodist earned another penalty kick. This time, Duncan dove to his right to make the save and keep the game tied. In the remaining 15 minutes of play, neither team was able to net the game-winner and the Lions walked away with their second draw in the last three games.
