DANVILLE, Va. – The Piedmont College men's soccer team stumbled to a 3-0 road loss on Friday afternoon at Averett in the team's regular season finale.
Although Piedmont (8-5-3, 6-3-3 USA South) took more shots and earned more corners, Averett (4-13-1, 2-9-1 USA South) scored twice in the first half and added a third goal early in the second half to cruise to the victory.
The Cougars struck in the early going, as Kellen Fees' first goal of the season put the Lions down a goal in just the 16th minute.
Then, after the Piedmont defense committed a foul in the box, Averett's Sean Dunbar converted the penalty kick to give the Cougars a 2-0 advantage heading into the break.
Averett held a 6-5 lead on shots in the first half, but Piedmont earned four corners, compared to just one for the Cougars.
After halftime, the Cougars did not let up, with Jake Searcy's goal in the early portion of the half moving the PC deficit to 3-0.
Despite the loss, the Lions still had a 17-12 shot advantage and a 6-2 edge in corners.
