Men’s Soccer Falls to Covenant in USA South Tournament First Round

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Covenant 3, Piedmont 0
Records: Covenant, 13-5-1; Piedmont, 8-6-3

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Piedmont College men's soccer team fell, 3-0, to Covenant in the USA South Tournament First Round on Tuesday evening in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.

After the Lions (8-6-3) were unable to capitalize on good looks to open the second half, the Scots (13-5-1) struck first on Jesse Riggs' penalty kick in the 56th minute, which was the first of three Covenant goals in the period.

Although the Scots held an 11-4 shot advantage in the first half, Piedmont's CAMERON EARLS had the best look of the period. However, his shot from just outside the box sailed high and left and the game went into the break scoreless.

The Lions opened the second half in full control, forcing Covenant goalkeeper Paul Lemay to make three outstanding saves in the early minutes.

The momentum turned as the Scots drew a Piedmont foul just inside the box, which led to Riggs converting his seventh goal of the season.

From there, the Scots controlled play, as they added a crucial insurance goal less than five minutes later. Then, in the 81st minute, they converted for a third time, as Josh Brower took advantage of a failed clearance and scored his fifth goal of the season.

The campaign concludes for Piedmont with an 8-6-3 record and included its first-ever 5-0 start to USA South play.

Covenant will advance to take on Greensboro in the USA South Tournament Semifinals.

TURNING POINT:
- Covenant goalkeeper Paul Lemay turned away three PC shots in the early moments of the first half. Minutes later, Riggs took advantage of a PK to give the Scots a lead they never relinquished.
