DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont college men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 double overtime heartbreaker to Covenant on Wednesday evening at the Walker Athletic Complex.
The Lions (7-2-3, 5-1-3 USA South) struck early in the first half, but the Scots (9-5-1, 6-2-1 USA South) equalized late in regulation and scored the game-winner with under a minute to play in the second overtime to hand PC its first conference loss of the season.
Piedmont held control in the early going, as
NICK POPE's header found the back of the net for his second goal of the year in the 18th minute.
However, from there, Covenant rebounded and gained control of possession in the second half. The Lions held strong until Austin Berry's perfectly-struck volley tied the game with just under nine minutes to play.
Playing their fourth consecutive conference overtime game, Piedmont forced the game into a second overtime period, where the Scots emerged victorious on Jake Major's header off a free kick.
Up next, the Lions remain at home to host Greensboro College this Saturday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m.
TURNING POINT:
- As the Lions were trying to kill the clock, and hold a one-goal lead the Scots' Austin Berry found the back of the net with a well-struck volleyball to the far post.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Covenant held an 18-9 shot advantage for the game, including an 11-5 edge in the second half and the two overtime periods.
