Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College baseball team split a pair of extra innings contests against the Covenant Scots Saturday as nine innings was not enough to decide either contest. The Lions won on a walkoff in game one 3-2 in 11 innings but it was the Scots who came away victorious in game two with an 11-10 win in 10 innings.
Game one saw the Lions take a 2-0 lead in the second inning as
GRIFFIN OLSON had a 2-RBI single and it was not until the fifth inning that the Scots would get on the board. Covenant scored twice in the fifth inning after a leadoff triple and an error in the frame to tie it at two.
It would remain tied at two with neither team able to string together more than one hit in an inning until the bottom of the ninth when PC had a pair of hits but a strikeout ended the inning with the game-winning run aboard at third.
In the 11th inning, a walk to
TYLER BURDETTE coupled with an intentional walk to
BRADY BALLSTADT put runners at first and second for
ZACH LANGLEY who reached on an error that allowed Burdette to score the game winning run.
BUDDY GREEN earned the win pitching the final two innings but it was
SAM CARPENTER who posted another masterful outing tossing eight innings allowing just one earned run on six hits and struck out five.
Game two was an offensive showcase that again took extras to decide as it was a 6-run ninth inning that allowed Covenant to rally and tie the game at 10. In the tenth inning, the Scots added another run to take the victory as Piedmont was unable to respond in the bottom of the frame.
The Scots out-hit PC 18-11 in game two but Piedmont did have four batters with two hits each in the contest led by Burdette who was 2-for-4 with four runs scored, two RBI and two walks.
