Piedmont Baseball Takes Covenant Series Opener 4-1 Over Scots

Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College baseball team picked up a series opening win over the Covenant Scots 4-1 Friday night as the Lions pitching staff shone bright under the lights at Loudermilk. Starter MAX BENING earned the win while the three relief pitchers over the final 2.1 innings did not allow a single hit. 

The Lions got off to a hot start putting two across the plate in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead, the only runs the Lions would need for the victory. JABIN SMITH was walked to start the game for Piedmont and came around to score on a ZACH LANGLEY groundout, then TYLER BURDETTE tripled to score BRADY BALLSTADT for the game-winning run. 

Then the contest became a pitcher's duel as neither team had more than one hit in a half inning until the Lions had four hits in the bottom of the sixth and picked up another pair of runs. Following the top of the seventh, the Scots did not record a hit as MATT VONDERSCHMIDT and BUDDY GREEN each pitched an inning with Green earning a pair of strikeouts in the final three outs.

CALEB NORTON was 3-for-3 at the plate Friday while BRADY BALLSTADT also had a pair of hits with PC recording nine total hits in the contest. 

Turning Point
--The Lions put up a pair of runs on two hits in the bottom of the first to establish the lead and never trailed in the contest. 

Standout Performances
--MAX BENING pitched 6.2 innings earning his fourth win of the season 

Inside the Box Score
--The Lions had six stolen bases in the contest with CALEB NORTON accounting for a pair. 

News & Notes
--BUDDY GREEN earned his fifth save of the season pitching the ninth inning. 

Up Next
--These two meet for a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. at Loudermilk Field.
