Orlando, FL - On day one down in Orlando, the Piedmont College men's tennis team came away with two wins shutting out Penn State Berks 9-0 to start the day before taking a 7-2 win over Monmouth College later Sunday evening.
Against Penn State Berks, Piedmont rushed out to a 3-0 advantage with ease in doubles action winning 8-1 at the top spot and 8-0 at #3. In singles play, all six decisions went the way of the Lions in straight set fashion.
In the second match of the day, the Lions would fall twice in singles but those would be the only marks on an otherwise perfect daily performance as Piedmont took all three doubles decisions vs. the Scots and wins at #1, #3, #5, and #6 singles.
Freshman
JACKSON HILL was impressive in both matches winning at #4 singles vs. Penn State Berks before stepping up to get a win and the decisive point at #3 singles later in the day vs. Monmouth.
Also consistent once again for Piedmont was
NATHAN METZGER who won both his decisions at the top singles spots while pairing with Hill to go 2-0 in doubles action as well.
The wins are the first for Piedmont in the young 2017 season as the Lions are also now 2-0 in their SpringBreakSports.com trip down to Orlando with competition continuing tomorrow.
Turning Point
--Piedmont's play in doubles was impressive throughout the day especially in the first match where the Lions took a 3-0 lead with just five games conceeded.
--Youngster Jackson HIll clinched the second win of the day for Piedmont with his straight sets victory at #3 singles.
Standout Performances

NATHAN METZGER,
JACKSON HILL, and
HARRISON LABOLLITA all went 2-0 in their singles competition for the first day down in Orlando.
--Metzger also paired with Hill in doubles to take both decisions while LaBollita and
KANLER CUMBASS also went a perfect 2-0 in doubles.
Inside the Box Score
--Ronnie Griffin and
BRYAN BARNETT played a thriller at #2 singles in the second match of the day with Griffin holding on 14-12 in the third for the decision.
--Doubles play in the second match was much closer with Monmouth taking 11 games while Piedmont limited Penn State Berks to just five earlier in the day.
News & Notes
--Today's matches were the first for Piedmont to not feature an opponent from the Southern Athletic Association in 2017.
