Eight Runs Over Three Innings Gives Panthers Decisive Third Game 11-6 Over Lions

Need to Know
Score: Piedmont 6, LaGrange 11
Records: Lions 10-6 (2-4 USA South), Panthers 15-2 (5-1 USA South)
Location: Demorest, Georgia - Loudermilk Field

Demorest, GA - In the rubber match of the first USA South series at Loudermilk Field in 2017, the Piedmont College baseball team dropped an 11-6 decision to #16 LaGrange College Sunday. The Lions led 6-3 but a grand slam by the Panthers' Casey Bell put them in front and proved to be the game-winning hit.

The Lions took control early as GRIFFIN OLSON doubled in the second spot in the order in the bottom of the first and was driven in by ANDREW BURDEN in the next at bat. Piedmont would tack on another run in the frame after Burden advanced to third on a wild pitch to put runners on the corners and scored on a COLLIN GRANT single.

Piedmont led 2-0 after three hits in the first, but the Panthers answered back in the second cutting the lead in half 2-1. The Lions wasted no time getting the offense back in gear scoring three runs on three hits in the second taking a 5-1 advantage with JUSTIN GROOVER recording a triple as the first hit of the inning.

LaGrange again answered back with a pair of runs making it 5-3 after two and half complete but PC would add its sixth run in the bottom of the third making it 6-3 Lions leading. From that point on, Piedmont would have just two hits in the game as the offense was shut down with Jonathan Fleckenstein earning the win pitching 4.2 innings giving up just a single hit and one walk to the 14 batters he faced.

The Panthers' offense clicked in the sixth after a leadoff single that blistered back to the mound forcing a pitching change for the Lions as LaGrange scored four runs on four hits. Casey Bell answered TYLER BURDETTE's grand slam from Saturday with one of his own putting the Panthers ahead 7-6.

Chad Pigg would also homer in the contest the following inning with a solo shot and the Panthers would score again in the eighth with three runs on three hits and an error.
