Atlanta, GA - The Piedmont College cycling teams made the short trip down to the finest skyline in the South this past weekend taking part in a USA Cycling road event hosted by Georgia Tech.
On Saturday morning, the Lions toed the line for the Brooks Road Race featuring a fun, rolling course the collegiate cyclists would cover various distances during one of the last few races prior to traveling to Collegiate Road Nationals in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Up first was the men's C/D event. After receiving their category C upgrade,
TANNER BATSON and
CONLEY WILHELM were the first racers off for Piedmont. Proving they earned their C upgrades, Wilhelm and Batson finished 3rd and 6th on the day.
In the Men's A,
DYLAN CANTRELL and Andrew Guelzo continued to show improvement and ability to contest the finish of any race by finishing 5th and 6th respectively.
In the afternoon, the four Lions would line up to compete in the team time trial, a team effort that would run over a 7 mile course distance. The rules of the team time trial included several key points including the ability to start four riders of the same gender with a must of finishing with 3 though the time of the third rider across the finish being taken as the teams finish time.
Showing the coaching and guidance of Head Coach Jame Carney, who is known for his tactics and execution, the Lions raced together to earn their podium spot by two seconds ahead of 4th place Milligan University.
On Sunday, the team would contest the Georgia Tech criterium, a five corner, downtown criterium course including some elevation gain. A rain overnight welcomed the Lions to a wet course for the men's C/D race at 8 am.
A victim of the slick conditions saw several riders hit the deck while the Piedmont College team was able to stay out of harms way. An active race would eventually see a field sprint where Conley finished 3rd and Tanner 6th, respectively.
The men's A criterium was animated and aggressive. Despite active involvement, a five person break away would get up the road without the Lions.
Working together in preparation to win the field sprint, Cantrell would eventually lead out teammate Andrew Guezlo after a slight mishap with approximately in the closing laps. Cantrell would help Guelzo finish 2nd in the field sprint, 7th overall.
Standout Performances
--The 3rd place finish in the time trial race displayed great tactics from Coach Carney helping PC to finish ahead of 4th place Milligan by just two seconds.

News & Notes
--Now finished with their regular season events in the road season, Piedmont will now have to wait more than a month to compete in the National Championship event hosted by USA Cycling out west.
