Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College women's lacrosse team dropped its first conference contest of the 2017 season Saturday to conference leader Meredith College 19-6. Both programs entered undefeated in league play with Piedmont sitting at 3-0 while the Avenging Angels had played just a single conference game.
The Avenging Angels controlled the game from the opening draw as they won all 13 draw controls in the first half. Meredith took a 3-0 lead over the first 17 minutes of play but
CAITLIN O'BRIEN setlled in and put PC on the board with 11:03 remaining in the first half.
CASSIDY HEFLIN would also add a pair of goals in the first half as well as an assist as
KAYLA JONES scored off a Heflin pass with 33 seconds to play in the opening period. The Avenging Angels led 8-4 at the half with a score with just 11 seconds to go until the half and added three more in the opening two mintues of play in the second half to lead 11-4.
O'Brien added another pair of goals off assists by
KAYLA JONES to give her 25 goals this season, but Meredith closed out the contest scoring seven unanswered to take the 19-6 decision.
Turning Point
--Meredith won all 13 draw controls in the first half giving them immediate opportunities on offense and keeping the Lady Lions at bay.
Standout Performances
--
CAITLIN O'BRIEN scored three of Piedmont's six goals while
KAYLA JONES posted three assists.
--Holly Hite led all scorers with five goals in the contest.
Inside the Box Score
--The Avenging Angels out-shot Piedmont 40-16 in the contest but of PC's 16 shots, 12 were on target.
News & Notes
--Meredith sits atop the league standings at 2-0 in conference play and is 9-1 this season after dropping the season opener to Mary Washington.
