Brevard, NC - The Piedmont College cycling teams rode this past Saturday at the Brevard College Criterium, a one kilometer course held around the Brevard music center including two uphill sections and a technical "amoeba" section.
When the team arrived the temperature was cool and the course damp from the early morning fog.
TANNER BATSON and
CONLEY WILHELM kicked off the day with their Men's category C criterium. Both Batson and Wilhelm just received their category C and category 4 upgrades and the Brevard criterium would serve as their first race in those respective categories.
With 40 minutes on tap, the men's C/D field went from the start, stringing out the field from the beginning. Despite a few break away attempts and a solo effort by Batson, the field would sprint for the win with Wilhelm finishing 3rd and Batson 13th, respectively.
The technical and increase in wind speed proved challenging for the women's A field. Wanting to stay out of harm's way, the pressure was on from the beginning.
After a split in the group, Allar would find herself in a two-person break away with a Lees McRae rider. Soon they were joined by a Milligan rider who opted out of working the break away. Unwilling to tow riders to the line, Allar attacked the small break away group to win the criterium solo.
In the Men's A race, a larger than normal field proved to be problematic for the existing race course. After several neutral laps prior to the start of their race, coaches and the race officials collaborated to change the technicality of the course to be more safe for such a large group of racers. Despite the delay, Andrew Guelzo and
DYLAN CANTRELL raced aggressively and smart, covering key moves and early break away efforts.
SCAD Atlanta proved they were the team to beat that day, sending two of their riders up the road to secure 1st and 2nd. Guelzo sacrificed his result to help Cantrell at the pointy end of the race. However, after a crash filled and complicated race, Cantrell finished 11th on the day.
